Users Coming Off Anti-Obesity Jabs Put On Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis reveals that patients who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a leading health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"People using such treatments must be aware of the danger of fast weight regain when the therapy concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain implies a return to original weight in about 18 months.

Weighing Approaches

The study, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Scientists emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through dieting typically experience a slower creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

The Reason for the Quick Rebound

Doctors believe the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the accelerated weight return.

These medications mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Withdrawal of this medication means appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Chronic Issue?

The NHS suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals contend that, given the high risk of relapse, the therapy should be considered ongoing.

This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "underscore the chronic nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Experiences

Users who have discontinued the medication explain a powerful return of appetite.

"It felt as if a switch flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled a patient.

This challenge is compounded if individuals have not established permanent lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Significant Use

Survey data show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.

  • Adoption is higher among females compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts caution that while the jabs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and maintained weight loss hinges on combined lifestyle changes.
