On his inauguration day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reinvent” the metropolis, promising “a new era” and an ambitious start to his administration.

A Groundbreaking Figure

The new democratic socialist, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, has become the city's first Muslim mayor. He additionally marked a milestone by being the first to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

“A time such as this is rare and rarer still is it that the citizens whose hold the controls for transformation,” Mamdani added.

Defying counsel to temper hopes, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will lead boldly and broadly.”

A Sweeping Platform

Mamdani now begins one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a platform featuring:

• No-cost bus transit
• A rent freeze for approximately 1 million households

The estimated $10 billion price tag of these initiatives may prove difficult to secure. Mamdani has pledged to increase levies for the wealthiest New Yorkers and big business. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

The new mayor also faces concern from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past criticisms regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a senior aide resigned over offensive past comments.

Mamdani has sought to ease these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was reportedly unexpectedly productive.

The Core Tests of Leadership

In the end, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in delivering essential functions: trash collection, curbing the rodent problem, fixing roadways, and making sure reliable subway operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's anti-crime efforts, citing record low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.

As his work begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky piece of advice about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his address with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
