Administration Announces Government Worker Job Cuts as Shutdown Nears Third Week

The White House disclosed the initiation of government employee layoffs on the end of the week, making good on prior threats in response to the ongoing US government shutdown, which is now poised to extend into its third consecutive week.

Formal Statement and Early Information

The director of the White House budget office wrote on social media that “reductions in force have begun,” referring to the official process for terminating staff.

While Vought did not specify which departments were affected, a representative from the Treasury Department confirmed that layoff warnings had been distributed within that department. Furthermore, a Department of Homeland Security representative indicated that layoffs would take place at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Also, a union representing federal workers announced that employees at the Department of Education would be impacted by the reduction in force.

Union Response and Court Actions

Union leaders warned that the layoffs would have “devastating effects” on services used by the public and pledged to challenge the moves in court.

“It is disgraceful that the administration has exploited the funding lapse as an pretext to illegally fire thousands of workers who deliver critical services to communities across the country,” said a national union president, representing the AFGE.

The AFL-CIO reacted to the news, saying, “America’s unions will see you in court.”

Legislative Impasse and Budget Dispute

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have declined to support a GOP-supported legislation to reopen the government unless it includes healthcare-centered concessions. Following multiple unsuccessful votes, the GOP leadership in the Senate have adjourned the Senate until next Tuesday, meaning the deadlock is not expected to be resolved before then.

During a press conference, the Republican House speaker, the speaker, criticized Senate Democrats for rejecting the Republican bill, which passed in the House on a near party-line vote.

Federal workers’ final pay that 700,000 federal workers will see until Washington Democrats decide to fulfill their duties and end the shutdown,” Johnson stated. Beginning shortly, military personnel, many of whom live on tight budgets, are going to miss a complete payment.”

Legal and Operational Constraints

Previously, unions sought a temporary restraining order to prevent the government from implementing any reductions in force during the shutdown. Additionally, a federal judge ordered the government to disclose details on layoff plans, impacted departments, and whether any government staff had been brought back to execute layoffs.

An analysis contended that a government shutdown limits the ability of the administration to conduct terminations, citing guidance that acknowledged any long-term staff cuts need to have been started prior to the shutdown began.

Impact on Workers

These terminations took place on the same day that government employees got only a incomplete payment covering the end of September but not the beginning of the current month, since funding lapsed at the beginning of the period.

A public service advocate, the head of the non-profit Partnership for Public Service, criticized the political stalemate’s impact on government workers.

“It is wrong to make government staff suffer because our leaders in the legislature and the White House have failed to keep our federal operations running,” the advocate stated. “Our flight regulators, veterans’ healthcare providers, wildland firefighters and food inspectors are not responsible for this government shutdown.”

The irony is that members of Congress and senior White House leaders are still receiving salaries amid the funding gap.
